Chickens
We focus on Silkie chickens here at the Holland Homestead. We started our flock by importing birds from many top breeders including; Magnolia Silkies, Yard Art Poultry, Marsha's Silkies and Satins, and Georgia Chick.
At this time, all our chickens free range together so you can get a variety of colors. We have Partridge, Black, White, Paint, Grey, Splash, Cuckoo, Buff, Chocolate, Mottled, and Millie. Last year I would say we threw more of the blacks, greys, and cuckoos when hatching, however we had plenty of whites and partridges as well. We only got a handful of paints, splashes, buffs, chocolates, and Millie splits. Here at the Holland Homestead we like variety, so we have a variety of feather types. We have your regular Silkie feathering, Frizzle Silkie feather types, Satin feathers, and Sizzle (Satin Frizzle combo) type feathering. We also have a few naked necks in our flock. At first I wasn't so sure about these odd looking fellows, but they grow on you. Check out more photos of our chickens on our Instagram and Facebook accounts, just search for The Holland Homestead. |
News
Spring fever has already hit, we are getting so impatient for new babies. We currently have five broody hens sitting on nests.
We have 7 Millie Silkie eggs from Five A Fancy Farms due to hatch the second week of March. We also have 30 eggs from our own stock due to hatch the third week of April. Most of them will be for sale. Our girls are laying pretty good right now. If anyone is looking for hatching eggs we have some. We are looking forward to see what our new breeders this year have in store for us. |
HealthOur flock is very healthy. We have never had a health scare. We only bring in eggs and never live birds so the chances of introducing a disease into our flock is rare.

Happy Chicken, Happy HeartAll our chickens are free range. They have a giant chicken mansion to call their own at night but during the day they have free range of our pasture. They spend their mornings eating all the bugs they can find and spend their afternoons being lazy in the shade of our fruit trees.

FeedAll the chickens have access to free range pasture during the day. They eat a variety of bugs and natural vegetation. As a treat they enjoy when I toss them things from the garden or fruit trees. They also have access to crumble food. I start all my babies out on medicated chick starter.
