Rabbits
I couldn't help myself, rabbits are too fluffy to resist. Like the saying goes, rabbits multiply fast, and the Holland Homestead has quite the colony. We focus on a few different breeds of rabbits here at the Holland Homestead. Jessica loves her English Angora's and Jason loves his Flemish Giants. Jason is currently trying to talk Jessica into adding Lion Heads to the line up. We started our colony by buying our stock from many top breeders including; Big Star Rabbitry.
English Angoras
The first time I saw an English Angora, I knew I had to have one. People warned me they were a lot of hard work, which they are, but they are by far my favorite type of rabbit I have ever owned. They are calm and loving, and oh so fluffy. I currently have a fawn doe(Jazzy) and a blue tort doe(Jinxy). I just added a new chestnut buck named Geranimo. All of my EA's are pedigreed. I am hoping for some really cute babies later this summer.
What do I do with the wool? I would love to learn how to spin and knit with it, put that on the list for next year. Right now I use it to do a few needle felting craft projects. It also comes in super useful if I have a mom rabbit who doesn't line her nest with her own fur.
Flemish Giants
Who doesn't love giant rabbits? My Flemish giants are super sweet. They always looking for chin scratches. I currently have several does, Big Momma, Black Magic, and a white one without a name as well as a black one without a name. We have one stud,Silver Bullet, a gorgeous grey Flemish. Silver Bullet is weighing in at 15 pounds right now, but hopefully he isn't done growing yet. Big Momma just had a new litter of 9 babies. The babies will be ready to go about Easter time.

HealthOur colony is very healthy. We have never had a health scare. We work really hard to avoid things like wool block by providing plenty of hay and papaya.

Happy Rabbit, Happy HeartAll our bucks are free range, they live colony style in our pasture. They have a giant wood pile they like to call home. They also like to share the chicken coop (mostly I think it is because they like to eat the chicken food). They spend their days chasing each other around the pasture.
All of our does have rabbit palaces. They also get out a few times a week to run free in the backyard. All of our does have at least one friend living with them. We find they are much happier when they have a buddy to live with. |
FeedAll our rabbits have access to fresh grass, grass hay, and pellets with 18% protein. They also get the occasional treat out of the garden. They are given a variety of mineral chews. They also enjoy chewing on pine cones and sticks.
